An Interview With Switzerlands Up And Coming Nu Metal Band CHAOSEUM

The word Chaoseum means museum of Chaos.

Up and coming Swiss based band Chaoseum was Founded in 2018 by Loïc Duruz and Valery Veings, both former guitarists of Symphonic Metal band Elferya. Theres Greg Turini on Drums and Singer CK Smiles joined the band later in February 2019, after their first album.

CHAOSEUM band hails from Switzerland. When creating music the band likes to explore different styles. They’re not really fixed on a singular genre. They like to reinvent themselves while simultaneously reviving the nu-metal sound of the nineties, a musical era the band grew up in. They are a fusion of nu- metal and metalcore. They released the song Smile Again during the pandemic and it exceeded 1M views on Youtube within 1 week. At this stage of the game they began to take thing a little more serious.

CHAOSEUM’S new album The Third Eye is definitely worth checking out. Theres talent here. The production is good and you can hear the intensive hard work and detail they put into every song. Dance On My Grave, Welcome Home, My Wonderland and Sanctum Cinerem have thick, monumental sound characterized by distorted guitars, extended guitar solos and emphatic beats that aptly produce a recurring chaotic theme. The verses on Welcome Home are incredible but then the chorus kind of throws you off. The bridge on Satctum Cinerem is extraordinary and reminds me of The Hating by Korn. Unreal has very dark lyrical content with hidden messages. My favorite track on the album is The Third Eye. Its a phenomenal album, I’m still digesting it. Their music is showing why there’s an upsurge in their ever growing fan base in the metalcore scene.

In the immortal words of the late great Hilly Kristal, “There’s something there, there’s definitely something there.” It will be very interesting to see what their sound evolves into in the future.

A brief history of the band

CK started playing music with his father at the age of 5, with whom he played his first concert. On his 8th birthday he started to study classical guitar at the conservatory of Lausanne.

CK: “Music is the best way to express all emotions. I started to play music with my dad when I was a little kid and I’ve never quit… and I never will.”

Loïc started playing guitar in 2002. He is totally self-taught. It’s while watching videos and live performances of bands like Deftones and Korn on MTV that inspired him to play guitar and start a band.

Valery is a big fan of Iron Maiden and it was while watching the live show “After Death” that he decided to buy his first guitar and start playing it.

Greg has always had a passion for drums. He started playing the drums at a very young age and decided to make it his profession and study at the conservatory. Today he teaches drums in his own school.

Metal Lair: How did you all meet and what was the catalyst in deciding to form a band?

Chaoseum: Valery and Loïc wanted to do a lot of gigs and for that we left our old band to create Chaoseum. Greg followed us directly and we contacted CK to join us.

Metal Lair: Who writes the lyrics and who writes the music?

Chaoseum: There is not a precisely defined rule. Loïc usually brings the musical part he shares with CK. In collaboration, they finalize the framework. Greg and I bring a little touch with our style of play. Regarding the lyrics, that’s CK and myself. The lyrics always come after the music because the latter inspires us for the theme of the lyrics. The edgelines are then created by CK. For the instrumental composition it is Loïc who composes the first drafts of the songs and then the arrangements are made with the band.

Metal Lair: Some bands write songs about politics, religion and other controversial material. Are there any subjects you consider off limits that you wont write about?

Chaoseum: We do not wish to give our political opinions. We prefer to talk about subjects that affect us personally and our life experiences.

Metal Lair: Your new album is phenomenal. Ive listened to it several times now. For me the stand out track is “The Third Eye.” What made you write this song and how did you come up with the intro?

Chaoseum: “Third Eye” was the intro to “Fly Away” but when we were arranging it we decided to make it a track. So we decided to create a heavy bass line and add some cello because CK plays it. We wanted to create something very atmospheric and CK had the good idea to do some oriental vocals to give this vibe

Metal Lair: The song Unreal is intense and has very dark lyrics. Are these lyrics personal? Who wrote this song and what exactly is this song about?

Chaoseum: “Unreal” talks about CK Smiles past and more precisely about his relationship with religion.

Metal Lair: What is the song I Sexy Zombie about exactly?

Chaoseum: In “I sexy zombie”, CK puts himself in the shoes of Hannibal Lecter.

Metal Lair: What is the music scene like in Switzerland? Do you guys play a lot of local shows there?

Chaoseum: In Switzerland, we have some good festivals and concerts. Like the Greenfield festival, etc. People like to go to festivals, but they don’t go to the concert halls as much to see the bands play. We have played a few gigs at home but we usually get more requests from other countries

Metal Lair: Do you all hang out together when not doing band stuff?

Chaoseum: Yes of course. We meet up and go to concerts and also for lunch, etc…

PANTERA’S First Show in 21 Years. Fan Filmed Footage

Well, it finally happened after many years. Pantera hit the stage and set it on fire last night at At Mexico HELL & HEAVEN METAL FEST to the delight of legions of fans. The Pantera reunion has sparked much controversy since its inception. Fans are divided due to the absence of the the bands co-founders, the Abbott brothers.

It was first reported in July that Anselmo and Brown would unite with Wylde and Benante for a world tour under the PANTERA banner.

The band will headline a number of other major festivals across North America, South America and Europe and stage some of their own headline concerts. They will also support METALLICA on a massive North American stadium tour in 2023 and 2024.

According to Billboard, the lineup has been given a green light by the estates of the band’s founders, drummer Vincent “Vinnie Paul” Abbott and guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, as well as Brown.

Last night, December 2nd Pantera played their first show in over 20 years, and it was totally action packed with high energy.

This was the groove-metal inaugural gig with their new lineup original members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown were joined by longtime friends Charlie Benante, Anthrax and Zakk Wylde, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society. and the start of a long tour schedule that’s set for South America this winter, and eventually Europe and the United States.

Fans at Mexico’s Hell & Heaven Metal Fest who were lucky enough to witness this historic event quickly flooded the internet with videos. Pantera‘s stacked, 15-song setlist was their most beloved material, including their cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan” during which a tribute video to the band’s founding brothers, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul — who passed in 2004 and 2018, respectively — played on the screen behind them.

Earlier this week, Benante told Metal Edge: “The first show with PANTERA is going to be kinda nerve-wracking. I’m probably gonna need a couple of drinks to be honest with you, to kinda settle me down… I need to get that first PANTERA show under the belt.”

Asked if he’s looking forward to any performing any particular PANTERA tracks, Benante said”: “I enjoy each one of them. When I look down at the list, I’m like, ‘Oh, I like this song,’ that type of thing. There’s two odd songs in there too that I don’t think they played, consistently, throughout [their] sets. Those are the two songs I enjoy playing the most, I think.”

Regarding the criticism floating around social media about relaunching the PANTERA name more than two decades since the group played their last show, and all the chatter about it not being a true reunion without Vinnie and Dime, Benante said: “First off, it’s not a reunion. It’s a celebration of the music. If you saw the thing that went out, it was like, ‘PANTERA featuring…’ the four of us. Those two guys are a part of this and who else is there? Vinnie and Dime are not here, so, Philip and Rex, they were that band, too. [They] deserve to be there as much as anybody. I see the negative stuff sometimes, and I’m just like, ‘This is so ridiculous, man.’ Just enjoy hearing those songs again.”

Benante told SiriusXM‘s “Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk” about how he plans to approach the PANTERA gig: “I can’t go do this as the drummer from ANTHRAX because it would be a different sound completely. So the way I’m gonna do that is if you close your eyes, it’s gonna sound like it’s Vinnie, basically. And that’s how it’s gonna be. The sound is gonna sound exactly like him.”

Wylde said that he had a similar mindset. “You approach it the same way as you do when I’m playing with Ozzy,” he said. “Obviously I’ve gotta learn Randy Rhoads‘s stuff and I’ve gotta learn Jake‘s E. Lee stuff, and when I was doing the BLACK SABBATH stuff, you learn it and do it as faithful as you can. Charlie‘s gotta learn all of Vinnie‘s parts. You approach it as if you’re in a cover band. When we do the ZAKK SABBATH stuff,” referring to his BLACK SABBATHcover band, “I don’t start changing lyrics midway through ‘War Pigs’. You learn the songs — so that’s what you do.”

A year ago, Anselmo said that he was up for reuniting with Brown for a special tour celebrating the music of PANTERA. The 54-year-old singer, who has spent the past few years playing a PANTERA-centric set with his solo band, THE ILLEGALS, discussed the possibility of re-teaming with his former PANTERA bandmate during an interview with Brazil’s Inside With Paulo Baron. Asked if he and Rex would be open to playing some shows in celebration of PANTERA‘s legacy, Anselmo said: “If Rex and I had a show to play, or we were ever gonna be on stage again together, I would welcome it with open arms. I love Rex. And he’d be the same way. We’re brothers forever. So playing on stage together, or doing some shows together, is not out of the question. It could happen.”

In April 2021, Rex told Eonmusic that he and Philip still get offers for a PANTERA tribute tour. “But if you don’t have the other guys in the band, it’s not going to sound the same,” he said. “If we were ever to do something like that, it would have to be spot-on, or I wouldn’t do it. It would be a tribute.”

Talk about a possible “Pantera” reunion” intensified when Anselmo regularly joined Wylde‘s BLACK LABEL SOCIETY to perform PANTERA‘s song “I’m Broken” during DOWN‘s 2014 stint on the “Revolver Golden Gods Tour”. That buzz only got stronger after Brown joined the jam on May 23, 2014 when the tour swung through Texas.

Up until his passing, Vinnie remained on non-speaking terms with Anselmo, whom the drummer indirectly blamed for Dimebag‘s death.

Vinnie Paul and Dimebag co-founded PANTERA. When PANTERA broke up in 2003, they formed DAMAGEPLAN. On December 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by a troubled schizophrenic who believed that the members of PANTERA were stealing his thoughts.

Currently on Extended European Tour – First Concert in 2023 with Iron Maiden Taking Place on June 3 in Tampere, Finland

Roughly three weeks after their great experience at the Eurovision Song Contest, LORD OF THE LOST have since returned to their “normal” life. Following their first festivals and concerts after the event, they are gearing up to play the first of their ten concerts with Iron Maiden in 2023 this Saturday in Finland. In addition, there will be multiple headline and festival shows, as well as concerts with Powerwolf and Amon Amarth, and their very own LORDFEST festival in Hamburg.

Today, the Germans have released the official lyric video for “noituLOVEr”. The song, influenced by the new wave and synth pop sound of the 80s, was released shortly before the ESC as part of the Earbook and Digital Deluxe Edition of the band’s #1-charting album, Blood & Glitter. Shortly after the release, Blood & Glitter entered the Official German Album Charts again at #2.

Chris Harms says:
“Lyric videos are not really our thing at all. But for a song like “noituLoVEr”, or “LOVE Revolution” as it is pronounced, where the lyrics are undeniably the most important thing, a lyric video was the only thing that made sense. “LOVE Revolution” is a song for all those who, even nowadays, still feel like they don’t quite fit in, in the prefabricated open puzzle pieces that our society leaves for us. Such as me. It’s equally a song for all those who are responsible for this problem. As long as any diversity in love is not as natural and accepted as breathing, it is important to stand up for the uniqueness of it – and to release songs like these.

Notes drummer and producer Phil SanGiacomo, “‘Death Is The Beginning’ was the first song we tracked for our new album, Desiderium. From the start, it felt like it had to be the opening track; it sets the tone and energy of the record right away.”

SOMNURI does not keep their feet planted in surface reality. The outfit’s flavor of heavy metal stomps from genre to genre with the fervor and confidence of a band ready to cross thresholds of all that’s perceivable and possible. Comprised of Justin Sherrell, Phil SanGiacomo, Chris Drapeau and bassist Mike G, the band has earned attention of taste-making publications like Revolver Magazine, BrooklynVegan, MetalSucks, Metal Hammer, and others and their latest effort is a testament to the band’s insatiable work ethic and cements them as one of heavy metal’s most exciting emerging acts.

Building off their previous two LPs, SOMNURI has spent the last several years hard at work writing riffs and letting their ideas distill in a marathon session of putting the songs together. The final product is Desiderium, an odyssey through a black hole of sounds and heaviness. Recorded at Gojira’s Silver Cord Studios, mixed by Justin Mantooth at Westend Studios, and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege Mastering, Desiderium is a true odyssey through a black hole of sounds and heaviness. Weaving their way seamlessly through a variety of tempos and sounds, the band give some well-trodden genres new roads to travel. Sherrell’s voice is insanely versatile, both able to deliver soul-filled clean vocals and some grim screams. It’s the perfect counterpoint to the band’s instrumentals, weaving a ladder between sludge, grunge, psych-rock and more.

Front to back, the abundant ideas and soundscapes turn Desiderium into a prism of sound. Every song is an amalgamation of what makes rock kinetic, bridging a gap between acts like Helmet, Karp, Handsome, and Quicksand with the sonic journeys of an Isis or Jesu. It’s their thirst for exploration that makes SOMNURI who they are: they’re an ascendant band, not constrained by any label or descriptor.

Canada’s MEDEVIL Shares New Guitar Playthrough For “Dead Before Birth” Off New Album Out Now! “Mirror in the Darkness”

Vancouver, Canada’s Medevil unleashed their latest album “Mirror in the Darkness” this past April 7th. The record is a big step up from their debut full-length “Conductor of Storms”, with a more progressive and ambitious direction than before. The album is also a tribute to drummer Chris Malcolmson who passed away after its recording. The songs on this new album have much more variety, and a lot more to offer, which should accommodate a wider array of music tastes from metal fans or fans of music in general. 

Today, the band’s guitarists Gary Cordsen and Brett Gibbs are unveiling their latest playthrough video for the track “Dead Before Birth” via its premiere on TechnicalMusicReview HERE.

“Kicking things off is Dead Before Birth, a hard-hitting opening track that begins with a drum-only intro. Featuring complex arrangements, precise timings, and vicious guitar riffs. Between the many different time signatures, dense guitar layers, and menacing chorus, Dead Before Birth’s goal is to be catchy while also challenging the listener. The lyrics are kept abstract, dealing in a metaphorical sense with the feelings of depression.”

About: Medevil is a highly energetic, fast-paced metal band known for its tight songwriting, intense stage presence, and roaring vocals. Calgary, Canada’s Red Cain is unveiling their latest third full-length “NÄE’BLISS”, now available as of June 2nd, 2023. The album is a homage to the legendary world of American author Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic “The Wheel of Time” (novel/TV series). With a grimdark edge, down-tuned guitars, death and power prog metal influences, and an unrelenting march forward,“NÄE’BLISS” is a foray into the reverse side of the Wheel of Time story – that of the Forsaken, antagonists, instruments of the Great Lord of the Dark, and the brutal and captivating allure of letting Chaos reign supreme.

Hard Hitting New York Melodic Deathcore Band GAINER Push Boundaries With Single “Violent Cycles”

New York’s Gainer was formed in the depths of COVID-19 in January 2021 originally as just a few guys getting together to jam and enjoy playing music together. Since then, they have released two albums “Cold Case” and “A Blackened Embrace”. Their primary focus is on playing catchy melodies and riffs and complimenting them with smashing breakdowns and build-ups that get people pumped and want to dance. Their latest single is “Violent Cycles”, a structured melodic progression that takes you through moments of pure aggression and filthy breakdowns to a powerful clean chorus that really puts you in the moment and makes you really feel the pain. PANTERA: ‘The Complete Studio Albums 1990-2000’ 5-LP Picture-Disc Vinyl Boxed Set Due In July

PANTERA‘s studio albums will make their picture-disc debuts in a new five-LP boxed set that spotlights the band’s everlasting mark on the metal scene.

“The Complete Studio Albums 1990-2000” (picture discs) will be available exclusively online at Rhino.com, Pantera.com, and indie retailers on July 21, limited to 3,500 copies worldwide ($149.98). Each picture disc features the cover image from the original album. The career-spanning set also comes with a poster featuring all four members.

The hard-hitting collection unleashes a decade’s worth of PANTERA‘s inimitable sound and fury from Philip Anselmo, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, Rex Brown and Vinnie Paul Abbott. It includes the double-platinum albums “Cowboys From Hell” (1990) and “Vulgar Display Of Power”(1992),platinum albums “Far Beyond Driven” (1994) and “The Great Southern Trendkill” (1996) and the gold-certified record “Reinventing The Steel” (2000).

“Cowboys From Hell” debuted in 1990 and is the album that made PANTERA heroes to headbangers everywhere. After peaking at No. 27 on the Billboard 200, the album went on to become one of the most influential metal albums of all time and was recently certified double platinum.

“Vulgar Display Of Power” arrived in 1992 and refined the band’s heavier-than-heavy aesthetic with songs like “Mouth For War” while simultaneously showcasing the group’s musical range on the haunting ballad “Hollow”. The album was certified double platinum and spent 79 weeks on the Billboard 200, longer than any other PANTERA album.

The band’s success continued in 1994 with “Far Beyond Driven”, the most extreme album to ever debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Several tracks became fan favorites, including “5 Minutes Alone” and a cover of BLACK SABBATH‘s “Planet Caravan”. The single “I’m Broken” was nominated for the Grammy Award for “Best Metal Performance” — the first of four Grammynominations the band would earn.

“The Great Southern Trendkill” was released in 1996 and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. The platinum-certified album contains some of PANTERA‘s darkest lyrics and fastest tempos, including “Suicide Note Pt. II”, nominated for the Grammy Award for “Best Metal Performance”. Guitar World magazine ranked Dimebag‘s solo on “Floods” at No. 32 on its list of the greatest guitar solos of all time.

PANTERA‘s final studio album, “Reinventing The Steel”, came out in 2000. The record peaked at No. 4 and was certified gold. The album features classics like “Goddamn Electric” and the Grammy Award-nominated single “Revolution Is My Name”.

PANTERA‘s surviving members Anselmo and Brown recently united with guitarist Zakk Wylde (OZZY OSBOURNE, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY) and drummer Charlie Benante (ANTHRAX) for a world tour under the PANTERA banner.

Anselmo and Brown, along with Wyldeand Benante, are headlining a number of major festivals across South America, Asia, North America and Europe and staging some of their own headline concerts. They will also support METALLICA on a massive North American stadium tour in 2023 and 2024.

According to Billboard, the lineup has been given a green light by the estates of the Abbott brothers, as well as Brown, who in 2021 said Wylde wouldn’t tour with PANTERA if a reunion were to happen. It’s unclear what changed his mind.

Rock Candy Magazine Issue 38 Out Now Featuring MOTLEY CRUE

MAY 31, 2023 — Mötley Crüe feature on the cover of issue 38 of Rock Candy Mag as legendary rock journalist Sylvie Simmons reveals exactly what it was like to be right at the heart of the action when the band first emerged onto Hollywood’s Sunset Strip back in 1981.

Simmons moved from the UK to Los Angeles in the 1970s to cover the US rock scene, and her timing couldn’t have been better as she got to witness first hand the rise of hard rock in the ’80s. “Mötley Crüe weren’t new wave, and Mötley Crüe weren’t nice,” she writes. “Mötley Crüe were delinquent and proud of it. But I could see that this band had something.”

Spearheading a new movement of young rockers who simply didn’t care about moral conventions or radio airplay, Mötley Crüe soon became buddies with Simmons, and she became one of very few people to be admitted into the band’s inner sanctum.

Reliving her first encounter with the band at The Starwood club in the spring of 1981, Simmons writes, “I was intrigued by a cluster of people I saw standing outside. They were pale – something that took serious commitment in sunny Los Angeles, with black Spandex pants and big shaggy hair.Inside the club, Mötley Crüe’s music sounded like someone had chopped up Sweet, Kiss, Alice Cooper and the Godz and put them all in a blender… They came across as deadly serious but at the same time trashy and a lot of fun.”

At her very first interview with the band, bassist Nikki Sixx was quick to tell Simmons about his unshakeable belief in Mötley world domination. “‘In five years maybe every band will look like us,’ he said. He couldn’t have imagined how accurate that was. Or that this group – which a local weekly newspaper would dub the worst band in LA –would spearhead an entire musical movement: glam metal, aka hair metal, the over-the-top, tarty, party scene that dominated a decade of US rock.”
