Aborted, Vault of Horrors Album Review

Written By Lindon Faynes

As creatures of habit, it is often easy to feel content with repetition and familiarity. We know what to expect and can find solace in homogeneity. This often applies to the music we listen to, something that follows a distinct style or sound that can make one feel gratification. Originality and personality can be and usually will be sacrificed for an indifferent but pleasing sound to feed this appetite.

Belgium’s Aborted have always been a band that were “style over substance” as in whilst offering nothing new to the death metal spectrum, do add a direct-on-target sound that utilizes the influences from Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse & Carcass that quenches that grim death metal thirst. I very much doubt Sven ever set out to redirect or reinterpret the genre but to just play brutal and intransigent music which has been accomplished album after album.

“Vault of Horrors” is an album comprised of drummer driven death metal. It is as fast paced and as frantic as any other current death metal sound. I am in no shape or form calling Aborted generic, but the riffs presented here are formulaic. Lots of tritone power chords & tremolo littered with syncopated chugging that draws a good amount of influence from the current deathcore sound sprinkled in with technical showmanship and the typical melodies used in most extreme metal. Not riff devoid by any means, however it is very paint-by-numbers in terms of songwriting and with the clean and very modern production does not help with differentiation from other similar acts. This is not a critique but more so an observation of the current extreme music scene what with bands using the same instrument brands, tunings and amp pre-sets. It all has a great sound however leaves a lot more to be desired in originality or ingenuity.

One of the main selling points for this release was that all 10 tracks (not including the bonus song) feature a well-known guest vocalist. I have always found that the most unique feature of Aborted’s music was frontman Sven’s vocals. He, alongside other belching greats Frank Mullens and George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher, have very distinct styles & sounds. I have heard songs he has guested on without knowing and was able to pick that it is him which should display my reverence for his voice. Kicking the thesaurus aside and just stating it – he’s an awesome vocalist. Everyone else is great too. However, hearken back to my point on the production and writing, these songs could have been written by the guests bands themselves. Eric from Despised Icon does his vocals over a slam riff and isn’t too different sounding from his own band, same with Oliver from Archspire, his section could be either Aborted or Archspire and this echoes for a good portion of the guest spots here (Fleshgod & Cryptopsy are exceptions to the rule). Despite this, it is understandable that the album would have these features as all these bands are touring brothers, and it would help bring in new fans.

In short, this album is a solid slab of death metal; did you really come in expecting more than that? Songs like “The Shape of Hate”, “Death Cult” & the grindy “Insect Politics” still batter your ear drums effortlessly. Solid but not stellar, safe but not stagnant.

In celebration of their 35th year as a band, this May, Rotting Christ are releasing their 14th album. ΠΡΟ ΧΡΙΣΤΟU (Pro Xristou) is bound to hold a revered place in the Greeks’ heretical history. Always true to their name, Sakis Tolis and his brother Temis pay tribute to the last of the Pagan kings. Today, they’re releasing the album’s rising and resolute new single, “Saoirse”.

Pro Xristou comes out May 24 on Season of Mist.

“Saoirse” pays tribute to the Irish King of Tara, who was one of the last kings to resist the expansion of Christianity. In Gaelic, “Saoirse” means “freedom”. The song invokes this long-heard ancient battle cry from the very beginning, opening with a distant clang of swords. “I am the wind that blows across the sea”, Sakis warns as a riff comes charging in behind him like a tidal wave.

Like all of Pro Xristou, “Saoirse” was recorded and produced in Athens, Greece. Their new single also embodies the history of the band’s home country with its resounding choir and thunderous drum fills. But it’s also emblematic of the way Rotting Christ has evolved over the past 35 years. Steered by a steadily chugging rhythm section, minor chords and melodic leads unfurl with the towering majesty of an ancient tapestry. At the center of this black metal fresco stands Sakis, the unwavering captain of Rotting Christ’s battle ship. “Hails to our ancient Kingdom”, he growls, still fierce and full of fight after all these years.

12. All For One (Bonus Track) (3:37) – Only Deluxe Editions!

In the dimly lit catacombs of extreme metal, one name stands as a monolith: ROTTING CHRIST. Sakis Tholis and his brother Themis started this band together back in 1987. In the three decades since, these Greek titans have left their blackened imprint all over the metal world. They’ve released 13 studio albums and played more than 1,300 concerts around the globe.  Underneath all this hard work, Rotting Christ have but one vision – an urge to not only push the boundaries of extreme metal, but to keep reinventing themselves along the way.

Rotting Christ’s evolution has unfolded across several distinct chapters. After starting out closer to the barely controlled chaos of grindcore, they went on to establish the iconic sound of Hellenic black metal. Their albums often embrace refined gothic soundscapes, only to plunge back into the depths of blasphemous fervour. Each chapter marked another, further exploration, and an unwavering commitment to push boundaries.

But the real turning point came in 2007, when Rotting Christ signed a pact with Season of Mist. They unleashed a series of albums for the French label that defied any and all expectations. From the piercing Theogonia and the symphonic grandeur of Aelo to the ritualistic intensity of Κατά Τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού, the cinematic experiences created by Rotting Christ became a spectacle of bombastic atmospheres, mesmerizing choirs, and neo-classical arrangements. The unexpected is their modus operandi, with the use of various languages (Latin, Arabic, Greek,  English) as well as the extensive use of famous poetry woven into their music, like Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Raven’ on The Heretics.

In 2019, Rotting Christ’s epic journey continued with The Apocryphal Spell compilation, which offers fans an intimate glimpse into unreleased and rare material. This allowed them to gather strength, preparing for the release of their next, highly anticipated, 14th full-length studio album: Pro Xristou.

Pro Xristou
(‘Before Christ’ in Greek), serves as a fervent tribute to the last Pagan kings who resisted the onslaught of Christianity, guarding their ancient values and knowledge. In this thematic odyssey, intricately woven through tracks such as ‘The Apostate’ and ‘Ygdrassil’, Rotting Christ delves into the legacies of historical figures such as Flavius Claudius Julianus and Nordic mythological kings, embodying the might of Pagan wisdom in the face of Christian adversity. The album encapsulates the essence of Rotting Christ’s signature style – melodic, yet harsh at times – reinventing themselves yet again, while remaining rooted in their 35-year legacy.

The dark accompanying music video channels ACCEPT’s captivating live energy and matches the sinister instrumentation and apocalyptic lyrics of the track.

Formed in 1976, ACCEPT was the first internationally successful German heavy metal band. ACCEPT have never shied away from hot button issues, and this album is no exception. Yet the band’s 17th studio album is certainly not a concept album. It deals with topics like AI and how our reliance on technology is gradually stripping away our individuality. ACCEPT offers a warning in this new album and title track single Humanoid. Since singer Mark Tornillo will never be an advocate for the digital age, he counterbalances the title track with raw emotions, frailties, significant Rites of Passage we encounter on the path of life and characteristics that make us uniquely human: feeling uncomfortable, getting older, dealing with hurt, disappointment, and the final stop for everyone: death.

Humanoid will be available in the following formats:
Ltd Box incl. CD Mediabook + Flag, Keytool in Guitar Look, Lighter, Photo Card, Textile Sticker – Napalm Records Mailorder exclusive (strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide)

– Digital Album

Ltd Box incl. CD Mediabook + Flag, Keytool in Guitar Look, Lighter, Photo Card, Textile Sticker – Napalm Records Mailorder exclusive (strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide)]

Humanoid is a ferociously electrifying, dynamic and subtly nuanced platter with tongue in cheek humor, as heard in biblical references on “The Reckoning” – an ode to concert audiences – a thrilling new spin on the “Frankenstein” story and “Straight Up Jack” – a track that surely would have been a Bon Scott approved drinking song.

The opening track “Diving into Sin” gives listeners a hair-raising energetic jolt with its Middle Eastern influenced intro, and an almost aggressive, screaming vocal from Tornillo setting the rest of the album up for a most bountiful feast. “Unbreakable” is as much about the band as it is the bond between ACCEPT and their fans, in the concert arena – an easy going “Hey, let’s do this” kind of rock song. “Mind Games”, on the other hand, has a vintage feel, circa “Metal Heart”“No One Gets Out Alive” seems tailor made for live shows. It says that regardless of life’s circumstances, rich, famous, or not, death is the great equalizer. Upbeat and aggressive with guitar interplay, “Southside Of Hell” ends the disc with a wonderful bit of wordplay, courtesy of Tornillo.

Humanoid is an album that targets the head, heart, gut and… balls! Listen for yourself!

Sentinels Full-Length Nears Release On Metal Blade Records

German heavy metallers VULTURE will unleash their fourth album, Sentinels, upon the masses on April 12th via Metal Blade Records. In anticipation of the release, today the band drops the fiery new single, “Realm Of The Impaler.”

If there is one band that combines a classic approach with fresh ideas and an expansive joy of playing to honor their ancestors from the likes of early ExodusMetallica, or Slayer, then it is VULTURE

Blabbermouth once hailed the band for breathing, “fresh life into the peerless sounds of the ’80s metal underground,” adding that, “while there are countless bands taking a similar approach, very few of them have either the songwriting chops or the inarguable conviction that this band keep delivering in massive, choking quantities.” Defenders Of The Faith Metalconcurred, “Their musical chops are such a force to be reckoned with; if they wanted to, they could form a traditional/prog metal band on the side, but they won’t. They’ll continue to subtly incorporate elements of such without losing their way.”

On SentinelsVULTURE proves once again that tradition and further development are not mutually exclusive, but on the contrary can lead to something extraordinary that leaves no headbanger untouched.

In direct comparison to the last album, Dealin’ Death, we’ve picked up the pace again noticeably,” says guitarist Stefan Castevet. “We’re bolder and a bit wilder again. It was important to us to be catchy and to include choruses that stick. Of course, we’ve basically retained our style, but we’ve defined the framework of the songs more clearly.”

VULTURE again recorded with Marco Brinkmann in his Hellforge Studio where there were also some innovations. “We had a clearly structured daily routine, a normal working day with set goals in which we could focus purely on recording the songs. Our previous recordings were a bit less organized which resulted in working overtime for everyone involved at the end. This is one of the reasons why Sentinels is the best sounding VULTURE record to date!

Comments Castevet on the band’s latest single, “‘Realm Of The Impaler’ shows our musical roots in classic heavy metal. Lots of twin guitars and melodies paired with driving drums and a dark atmosphere. The song proves that we are much more than a typical ‘hit it’ thrash band. Lyrically, the song deals with the infamous figure Vlad Tepes: His name a curse, his tongue a whip!

Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk, the new full-length from Faroe Islands-based death/doom collective HAMFERÐ, is out today on Metal Blade Records!

When this magisterial sextet’s third album Támsins likam emerged in 2018, the highly acclaimed and powerfully emotive opus thrust the mourning-suited band onto the world stage. Louder Sound championed, “a stunning triumph,” Heavy Music HQconcurred lauding a, “tour de force for the band,” while Bandcamp Daily observed accurately, “HAMFERÐ presents metal’s obligatory preoccupation with dying in a light we rarely see it, finding melodrama, romance, and – yes – beauty in mortality.”

Six years on, the accumulation of plentiful live experience and interpersonal chemistry has had a profound impact on HAMFERБs extraordinary fourth LP, Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk, feeding into the artisanal sonic vision of guitarist and producer, Theodor Kapnas. Avoiding all the quick-fix trickery of modern recording technology, the band recorded the songs together live in the studio, without a click-track. The result is a resoundingly human album that heaves, swoops, and shifts in elemental style – from passages of glacial post-metallic beauty through sorrowful folky goth cadences, via icy blackened blastbeats to shuddering vistas of extreme doom mastery – with a crackling tight-but-loose interplay recalling the giants of yesteryear.

The narrative concept behind Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk is inspired by the 1915 whaling disaster off the Faroe Island village of Sandvik (home of HAMFERРkeyboardist Esmar Joensen), when fourteen men died driving whales ashore in the stormy bay. The village population witnessed the tragedy from the seaside. The sad tale has enabled HAMFERРto powerfully bring to life the meaning behind their Faroese name, zeroing in on the traumatic emotional force behind this supernatural phenomenon.

In celebration of today’s release, the band has unveiled a video for “Marrusorg.” “‘Marrusorg’ describes a parent’s attempt to create an imaginary world to avoid facing the death of their child. The verses are a dreamlike nursery rhyme where the child is the hero in an underwater kingdom. The choruses represent the unbearable grief that floods over the parent when this fantasy melts away.”

Watch HAMFERБs “Marrusorg” video at THIS LOCATION.

In related HAMFERРnews, the band will join Sólstafir and Oranssi Pazuzu for a portion of the Nordic Descent Tour this November.

Comments the band, “We are very excited to hit the road with our friends in Sólstafir and the amazing Oranssi Pazuzu. It’s a musically diverse package which we are honored to be a part of, and we can’t wait to perform our new music on stages around Europe. The true depth of this work may not be immediately apparent – but knowing all its facets, you can hardly help but let yourself be absorbed and drawn in by it.” — Metal Hammer Germany

…heavy riffs meet deep growls and pleading clear vocals as well as melodic sprinkles and a pleasant mixture of anger and melancholy… the album… invites you to let out your frustration about the misery of this world over a cold drink. And that’s exactly what music like this is for…” — Slam Magazine

HAMFERÐ’s latest offering is a powerful, emotionally charged exploration of tragedy, memory, and the indomitable human spirit. It is an album that stands as a bold statement from a band that continues to push the boundaries of their genre, crafting music that is as deeply felt as it is beautifully rendered.” – Lots Of Musik

Very few records that exist in this genre are a strong as Hamferð’s music, and Men Guðs Hond er Sterk simply reinforces Hamferð’s mastery of the style.” — Wonderbox Metal

The band excels at transmitting vibes of desolation and hopelessness with their music, and with Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk they take things to a whole new level.” — Infernal Masquerade

…a marriage of music and meaning… I haven’t “felt” another album as deeply this year.” — Metal Temple

[HAMFERÐ] continues to strike a fine line between entrancing melodies that have a bleaker, melancholic tone alongside more crushing riffs, but this time the formula has been shaken up a bit more and some of these songs are their most destructive to date.” — Metal Trenches

Dreaded Metal Pirates ALESTORM Conquer the Aral Sea and Unveil “Uzbekistan” + Official Video | Watch HERE

New EP, Voyage of the Dead Marauder, out this Friday, March 22 | Get Your Copy HERE

Currently on Tour in North America!

Oh wow! Just in time for the release of their upcoming EP, Voyage of the Dead Marauder, pirate parties are raging around the world with ALESTORM’s new, infectious single “Uzbekistan”, out now alongside an official music video. The new EP, Voyage of the Dead Marauder, drops this Friday, March 22, 2024 via Napalm Records.

The crew sails forth with “Uzbekistan”, showcasing a classic pirate metal anthem featuring a synth-laden party breakdown full of intense screams while teaching geography to the greatest historians about the famous pirate-sea-land of Uzbekistan.

This EP succeeds the  band’s chart-topping previous album, Seventh Rum of a Seventh Rum, which debuted at #7 on the German album charts and #5 on both the US Current Hard Music and Top New Artist Albums charts upon release, as well as six further humorous masterpieces. After a successful UK and Ireland tour supported by Korpiklaani and label mates Heidevolk, and a long crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, they are currently headlining venues in North America!

Chris Bowes comments:
“Oh wow! We’ve decided it is our life goal to become the biggest band in Uzbekistan, so we wrote this wee song about the place. I trust it is 100% historically accurate.”

Watch the Official Video for “Uzbekistan” HERE!

ALESTORM return to the seven seas with new Pirate Metal anthems!

The EP breaks loose with the epic title track Voyage of the Dead Marauder – an accelerating anthem featuring an appearance from returning guest favorite Patty Gurdy, giving the track some extra spice with a hurdy-gurdy performance and captivating vocals. “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate” will transform any gathering into a packed pirate pub with its jolly flute melody, conveying a freeing, energetic mood, before “Sea Shanty 2” uplifts with an instrumental interlude. But don’t fret – listeners who clamor for the band’s most raucous anthems will have their needs met, as closing track “Cock” fully balances out the EP’s more serious tracks with its delightfully foul lyrics. Get on board landlubbers, and embark with your favorite pirate crew on this seaworthy adventure!

North American Tour With Amon Amarth Draws Near

Death metal icons CANNIBAL CORPSE are pleased to unleash a video for “Vengeful Invasion.” The track comes by way of the band’s critically-adored Chaos Horrific full-length, released last Fall via Metal Blade Records.

The video was directed and edited by Zev Deans and shot by Brendan McGowan with SFX makeup by Nina Carelli, AI footage manipulation by KingCon2k11, and stars Actually Huizenga from the band Patriarchy. With “Vengeful Invasion,” a human trafficking revenge tale spirals into grotesque phantasmagoria in the spirit of Japanese horror classics.

Watch CANNIBAL CORPSE‘s previously released videos for “Chaos HorrificHERE, “Blood BlindHERE, and “Summoned For SacrificeHERE.

Since 1988, CANNIBAL CORPSE has remained at the forefront of death metal, shaping and defining the genre. In 2021, they raised the stakes again with their Violence Unimagined full-length. In 2023 they returned with its successor, the equally monstrous Chaos Horrific, consequently beginning the next chapter in their legacy. Produced again by guitarist Erik Rutan, who has now produced six of the band’s albums, Chaos Horrific is, without question, a full-on, CANNIBAL-style death metal outing, straight down to the themes, which include zombie warfare, resetting the human race through mass mutilations, and the violent revenge of victims of human trafficking, and its cover art by longtime collaborator Vince Locke.

Chaos Horrific slaughtered Billboard charts upon its first week of release, earning the #7 position on the Billboard Album Sales chart, #2 on the Hard Music Albums chart, #3 on the Rock Albums chart, #5 on the Independent Label Albums chart, and more!

The record is available on digipak CD, cassette, and digital formats as well as vinyl in multiple limited color variants.

Job for a Cowboy Unleashes “Beyond the Chemical Doorway” Video And Single

Moon Healer Full-Length To See Release February 23rd On Metal Blade Records

Watch JOB FOR A COWBOY’s “Beyond The Chemical Doorway” video HERE

Experimental death metallers JOB FOR A COWBOY are pleased to unleash “Beyond The Chemical Doorway,” the latest single from their long-awaited new full-length, Moon Healer, set for release on February 23rd via Metal Blade Records. The release marks the iconic outfit’s first new full-length in a decade!

Moon Healer is a vivid illustration of what happens when creativity, aggression, and volatility tangle for the first time in years. Like the band’s critically adored, 2014-released Sun Eater full-length, Moon Healeris musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. Featuring a newly refreshed and reinspired lineup of frontman and co-founder Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis, the band seamlessly picks up the mantle where Sun Eater left off.

“Moon Healer” track listing:

01. Beyond The Chemical Doorway
02. Etched In Oblivion
03. Grinding Wheels Of Ophanim
04. The Sun Gave Me Ashes So I Sought Out The Moon
05. Into The Crystalline Crypts
06. A Sorrow-Filled Moon
07. The Agony Seeping Storm
08. The Forever Rot

Compared to past offerings, Moon Healeris as bone-crushing as JOB FOR A COWBOY has ever been. But it’s more consistent and conceptual, composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence. “The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band,” Davy says. “As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn’t have considered in our earlier years.

When discussing the lyrical genesis of songs “Grinding Wheels Of Ophanim,” “Into The Crystalline Crypts,” and latest single, “Beyond The Chemical Doorway,” Davy’s writing gets cryptic and elliptical-sounding, part Philip K. Dick, part Timothy Leary. “I envision this as a death metal album born from the mystical confines of an alchemist’s laboratory. The music acts as potent potions, inducing hallucinogenic journeys that unlock the secrets of the universe.”

With “Beyond The Chemical Doorway,” Davy explores Gnosticism — an occult teaching based on Gnosis, a state of transcendence achieved through intuitive, unconventional means — by way of Hieronymus Bosch’s art. Elaborates Davy, “On Moon Healer, we unravel the dismal narrative of a close friend consumed by an unwavering pursuit of enlightenment. They achieve this through a compulsive embrace of hallucinogenic drugs. This storyline emerges from the foundation set in our earlier album, Sun Eater, delving deeper into the intricacies brewing within our friend’s psyche.

When under the influence of these drugs,” he continues, “this individual claimed to encounter entities and find themselves in indescribable worlds that defy rational comprehension. Many who undergo such experiences draw intriguing parallels between diverse facets of Gnostic philosophy, biblical depictions of angels, and the stages of Bardo Thodol delineated in the Tibetan Book Of The Dead. In the album’s opener, ‘Beyond The Chemical Doorway,’ our friend vividly voices his hallucinations, recounting the experience of breaching forbidden, gnostic-like realms, with each account culminating in the utter unraveling of his being.”

Watch JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s “Beyond The Chemical Doorway” video at THIS LOCATION.

Watch the band’s previously released videos for “The Agony Seeping StormHERE and “The Forever RotHERE.

Moon Healer was produced by Jason Suecof (Death Angel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide) at his Audiohammer Studios and is the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project Fleshwrought, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Koperweis also worked as a session drummer for Machine Head and Whitechapel and is currently in the band Entheos, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023.

Moon Healer will be released on CD, digitally, and on vinyl in the following color variants:

Vinyl US:

Blue And White Marbled
Pink And White Marbled
Magenta Marble (Independent Retailers)

Vinyl EU:

VOLCANDRA announce new album, ‘The Way of Ancients’; Lead single and music video, ‘Fouled Sanctity’, premiering now

Photographer credit: Patrick Ballard

VOLCANDRA is:
Dave Palenske – Vocals
River Jordan – Guitar
Jamie DeMar – Guitar
Andrew Casciato – Bass
Mike Hargrave – Drums

Louisville, Kentucky blackened melodic death metal band, VOLCANDRA has today announced their forthcoming second album, The Way of Ancients, which is due for release via Prosthetic Records on March 1. Alongside the album announcement, VOLCANDRA are currently premiering the lead single and accompanying music video, Fouled Sanctity, via Decibel.

LISTEN TO AND WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR FOULED SANCTITY VIA DECIBEL HERE.
Fouled Sanctity will be available on all streaming platforms on Thursday, February 1.

Pre-order The Way of Ancients here.

Speaking on the album announcement, VOLCANDRA comments: “The Way of Ancients features an over arching high fantasy concept inspired by some of our favorite pieces of media from the sword and sorcery genre. It tells a tale of unlikely heroes traversing through deadly terrain in order to take on insurmountable forces of darkness. The album title refers to the final passage that must be taken in order to complete such a perilous quest. For this release we blended our influences from thrash metal, melodic death metal, and black metal all into one finely crafted sonic assault. It is our most aggressive record to date and we can’t wait to bring these songs to a venue near you. We are ecstatic to share this album that we are very proud of on the world stage via Prosthetic Records and expand our reach as far as possible.”

Of Fouled Sanctity, they add: “We chose Fouled Sanctity as the first single for this record because it takes no time to get going. From the first note you know you’re in for a banger. The track showcases our love for thrash and death metal with a blackened twist, but not without a hint of melody in the mix. The lyrics are about a brave warrior who ventures into the depths of a defiled cathedral that has been infested with demons in which he must do battle with. By the end of his quest he is possessed by the soul of the beast who is the cause of all of this chaos. For the music video we recruited our good friend Malcolm Pugh (Inferi) once again. The video pays homage to sword and sorcery films of the 1980’s and our love for analog media of yesteryear.”

Following the release of their well-received Border World EP in 2022, VOLCANDRA breathed life into their continually evolving universe of myths and extreme metal fantasy epics across stages in North America. Amassing tours alongside labelmates Tómarúm, multiple solo headline runs, and a support stint with The Convalescence, VOLCANDRA’s dynamic as a unit in 2024 is one of unwavering confidence and lofty ambition.

Galvanized by their growing rapport and momentum from the road, The Way of Ancients’ writing process came quickly and naturally to the band in the winter of 2022. Vocalist and lyricist Dave Palenske’s affinity for concept albums led to The Way of Ancients’ creative decision to implement an overarching story, with particular influence from the classic early Diablo video game series as well as the escapism found in sword and sorcery eighties films such as Conan, Clash of the Titans and Excalibur.

Commencing production in January 2023 with Mike Low (Cattle Decapitation, Khemmis, INFERI) at the helm for tracking, mixing and mastering, VOLCANDRA also enlisted Entheos’ Chaney Crabb and Navene Koperweis for drum recording. Further contributions also see choral singing throughout the release from Oubliette’s Emily Low. Whilst The Way of Ancients retains VOLCANDRA’s inclination for melodicism, both in songwriting and production value, guitarists River Jordan and Jamie DeMar’s synergy and growing desire for a more bellicose approach to the blackened aspects of their sound is evident throughout the near 40 minute runtime.

Intent to keep aesthetic continuity of their established narrative thread, longtime collaborator Varises Otak (Cryptopsy and Amon Amath) masterfully brings The Way Of Ancients’ visual identity to life with the cover art.

The Way of Ancients tracklist:
1. Birth of the Nephalem
2. Fouled Sanctity
3. Nemesis Confession
4. Maiden of Anguish
5. Seven Tombs
6. The Blackened Temple
7. Not Even Death
8. The Way of Ancients

Whitechapel To Release Live In The Valley Digitally January 26, 2024 Via Metal Blade Records

Whitechapel is:
Vocals: Phil Bozeman
Lead Guitar: Ben Savage
Rhythm Guitar: Alex Wade
Guitar: Zach Householder
Bass: Gabe Crisp

Whitechapel has announced a new live album, Live In The Valley, which will be released digitally on January 26, 2024 across all digital platforms. The album contains songs from the albums “Kin” and “The Valley” and was recorded live at the band’s 7th annual Christmas Benefit Show on December 22, 2022 at The Mill & Mine in their hometown of Knoxville, TN.

Here’s what guitarist Alex Wade had to say about Live In The Valley:

“We decided to record the audio from our 7th annual hometown Christmas benefit show in 2022 where we played a mixed set from our albums ‘The Valley’ and ‘Kin’. We thought this would be a good way to close the chapter on these albums before we start recording our 9th album. The audio was recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered by our very own Zach Householder and we are excited about the way that it turned out. Along with the audio we shot 2 live videos to accompany the live album release.”
Check out a live video for the track “Lost Boy”off the upcoming live album that was created by Marshall Wieczorek below.

Whitechapel wrapped up 2023 on the road, taking to the stage with Meshuggah and In Flames for four weeks including a pair of headline shows. The band then headed home where they headlined their 8th annual Christmas Benefit Show at The Mill & The Mine, marking the band’s final show of 2023.

About the band:

At this stage in the game, the name Whitechapel commands respect. Already sitting on one of the most enviable catalogs in contemporary metal, in 2019 they dropped The Valley, showcasing a confident evolution in their sound and standing as a true landmark release that sets a new standard for the genre. “To me, it was like the stars aligning for us to create our almost perfect record in regard to songwriting, vocal performance, the mix and master, and the artwork,” says guitarist Alex Wade. “We like to look at our albums as chapters of our career, and that is one chapter I will never forget. I think it really solidified that we can embrace a new sound, and if we execute it properly, then the fanbase is going to support and enjoy it.” In 2021, they return with that album’s successor, the mighty Kin, which is an even more dynamic and diverse collection, further advancing the band’s sound into new territory without losing sight of what brought them to this point. “I feel with every album, we learn what worked best on the last one and try to utilize that in our writing. Early in the writing, there was some discussion of the album being like ‘The Valley’ part II, not literally called that, but in how the songs sound and flow through it. It’s very much a storytelling type record like ‘The Valley’ was,” adds vocalist Phil Bozeman, “Musically, we just want to create what we vibe with at the given moment. We write music with how we feel and not what is expected of us, while lyrically the idea of continuing from the story of ‘The Valley’ was always the goal.”

Track Listing:

1.When a Demon Defiles a Witch (Live) 2.Forgiveness Is Weakness (Live) 3.Brimstone (Live) 4.Hickory Creek (Live) 5.Black Bear (Live) 6.Doom Woods (Live) 7.I Will Find You (Live) 8.A Bloodsoaked Symphony (Live) 9.Anticure (Live) 10.Lost Boy (Live) 11.Orphan (Live) 12.This Is Exile (Live) 13.The Saw Is the Law (Live)

“For a generation of fans, Whitechapel are the most legitimately brutal band of the deathcore movement” – Kerrang!

“Their music attacks from the first track, and they draw you in, commanding your attention with their performance and presence. This is how I’ve always felt about Whitechapel” – Metal Nation

“Whitechapel has certainly become, in my opinion, one of the more unique metal bands still making music today” – Metal Injection

Job For A Cowboy Unveils A Transformative Journey in Their Latest Dark And Surreal Concept Album, “Moon Healer”

Jonny Davy – vocals
Al Glassman – guitar
Tony Sannicandro – lead guitar
Nick Schendzielos – bass
Navene Koperweis – drums

The iconic extreme experimental death metal lineup of Job For A Cowboy had some long-awaited unfinished business. After nearly nine long years of silence, they have awoken from their slumber, forging Moon Healer, the follow-up to their previous landmark album, Sun Eater.

But why the extended wait? “I had to take a step back in the band for family. It was the catalyst that eventually created a fork in the road for all of us. We all drifted into our separate paths,” explains frontman and band co-founder Jonny Davy. “Fatherhood, additional music projects, academic degrees, and careers outside the band took priority and life’s focus,” so the band agreed on a prolonged hiatus, but with the door open for a return. “Everything lined up for us to collaborate on a new project together, it was time to cross the threshold for something new,” states Davy.

Originally based in Arizona, the band’s long-awaited album, Moon Healer, is a vivid illustration of what happens when creativity, aggression, and volatility tangle for the first time in years. Like Sun Eater, Moon Healer is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. The first single, “The Agony Seeping Storm,” is a mathematically mind-blowing hybrid of bludgeoning death metal specializing in unconventional riffing that echoes the resemblance of legendary experimentalists like Cynic, Atheist, and Gorguts. A newly refreshed and reinspired lineup–Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis–all seamlessly pick up the mantle where their previous album, Sun Eater, left off. “The Agony Seeping Storm” unequivocally signifies Job For a Cowboy’s triumphant return. “The Forever Rot” stands in stark contrast, delving into a lonesome and haunting guitar melody, then evolving into shimmering reflections of Obituary, Coroner, Voivod, and even hints of Neurosis. In other words, forget about your preconceived perceptions of what this band was. This twists vocal tropes, chord forms, and melodies into loops of razor wire.

“The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band,” Davy says. “As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn’t have considered in our earlier years.”

Compared to past offerings, Moon Healer is as bone-crushing as Job For a Cowboy has ever been. But it’s more consistent and conceptual – composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence.

“As most bands have at one point or another found themselves in the situation of having to meet strict deadlines, this was not the case for Moon Healer,” Davy says. “We started laying the groundwork for this album in 2018. Being as busy as we were in life, we managed to slowly chip away. This slow pace gave us significantly more time to analyze and dissect what we were doing, which in turn helped make a better album.”

When discussing the lyrical genesis of songs like “Beyond the Chemical Doorway,” “Grinding Wheels of Ophanim” and “Into the Crystalline Crypts,” Davy’s writing gets cryptic and elliptical–sounding, part Philip K. Dick, part Timothy Leary. “I envision this as a death metal album born from the mystical confines of an alchemist’s laboratory. The music acts as potent potions, inducing hallucinogenic journeys that unlock the secrets of the universe.”

Right when it seems like Davy is suffering from some particularly strong psychedelic trip that went wrong, the vocalist explains that the entire album is the second part of a dark, surreal concept that began with 2014’s Sun Eater (hence, that “unfinished business” the band needed to complete). “Sun Eater was an arrangement of melodies inspired by a close friend of the band who lost touch with reality due to excessive hard drug use,” Davy says. “This person was predisposed or was already experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder and/or schizophrenia. They believed the drugs were providing them with eye-opening epiphanies. They believed that the drugs allowed them to cross into a reality closer to God. Likewise, they didn’t have the self-awareness that they were falling further down the depths of their own mental illness. The songs reflected the thoughts, ideas, and situations this person encountered.”

Moon Healer offers Job For a Cowboy’s fresh perspective on the protagonist from Sun Eater. Instead of descending into madness, the character achieves transcendence through chemical indulgence.

“The concepts in the album follow someone attempting to explore a different human existence,” explains Davy. “They considered themselves a pseudo-alchemist. They obsessed over esoteric methods to access altered states of consciousness through various pathways, including a focus on the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland within the center of the brain is believed to potentially play a role in entheogenic experiences. They cooked mind-altering consumables. But contrary to what others viewed as their descent into delusion, they were under the belief that they were unlocking the gateway to some form of profound enlightenment.”

Davy creates vivid, startling, and otherworldly imagery reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, and Aleister Crowley through a combination of studied composition and stream-of-consciousness writing.

“Take me to the divine concept that is not understood by the human eye / The place where only a transcendent image will reside / The walls softly breathe with life as my heart shudders with misery / Cells throughout my flesh vibrate against a devolving visual periphery,” Davy shouts over a vortex of snarling guitars and mind-melting bass work with “Into the Crystalline Crypts.” In “The Agony Seeping Storm,” he immediately references the Emerald Tablet, the ancient text attributed to Hermes Trismegistus: “As above, so below / As within, so without / As the universe, so the soul / I find myself infectiously waiting for a glimpse at the dismal sun.” Later references include Carl Jung’s philosophies on the death of ego and its relation to drug use.

And in “Beyond the Chemical Doorway,” Davy explores Gnosticism (an occult teaching based on Gnosis, a state of transcendence achieved through intuitive, unconventional means) by way of Hieronymus Bosch’s art. “Horrors of lower Gnostic realms have been crusted shut and are never to be unsealed / A crystallized coating obscures unraveling hells from my occultic eye, forever to be congealed / But this membrane decalcifies, it exposes the organ of souls It bestows an immense gravity, weaving subatomic black holes / I rot in repetition, an eternal decomposition.”

Explaining his morbid wordplay, Davy credits his efforts to tap into the brain’s ability to tear down inhibitions and produce horrific visions. “When under the influence of these drugs, this individual claimed to encounter entities and find themselves in indescribable worlds that defy rational comprehension. Many who undergo such experiences draw intriguing parallels between diverse facets of Gnostic philosophy, biblical depictions of angels, and the stages of Bardo delineated in the Tibetan Book of the Dead.”

Job For a Cowboy delved deeply into the music of Moon Healer, as Davy did for the vocals and lyrics. The band traveled to Sanford, Florida to record with producer Jason Suecof (Death Angel, Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide) at his Audiohammer Studios. Having already collaborated on three previous records with Job For A Cowboy, the band had developed a strong rapport with Suecof, establishing a level of trust and familiarity.

“Jason Suecof has a supernatural ear in the ability to find hidden potential in music,” Davys says about the time in the studio. “We’ve gone through this same ritual with Jason for a multitude of reasons. But the most obvious one is that he’s a masterful songwriter, guitar player, and even vocalist. He has an ear for ideas that very few seemingly have. He totally understands where we’re coming from as a band.”

Moon Healer is the first Job For a Cowboy album to feature session drummer Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project Fleshwrought, which released the Metal Blade album Dementia/Dyslexia in 2010. Koperweis has also worked as a session drummer for Machine Head and Whitechapel and is currently in the band Entheos, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023.

“Navene and I shared a bond that goes back to my late teens when we became comrades in the metal scene,” Davy says. “Some of Job For a Cowboy’s earliest shows and tours were with Animosity. So, reaching out to Navene to play a major part in this project was a no-brainer.”

Although Job For a Cowboy worked tirelessly on their new batch of complex, multi-faceted songs, recording Moon Healer was ultimately a labor of love that reminded Davy why he wanted to be in a band in the first place.

“There’s so much spontaneity and fun experimentation that occurs when we work with Jason Suefcof,” Davy says. “It’s a nostalgic energy that brings you back to the days when you were teenagers writing riffs in garages.”

With Moon Healer, Job For a Cowboy has woven the thematic qualities of Sun Eater and used them as a platform to launch deeper into inner and outer space, using fictional situations to ponder the possibilities of existence outside the carbon-based form. For fans of experimental, progressive, and extreme death metal, Moon Healer is a satisfying, transformative metal journey unlike any other. And for those who wish to dig a bit deeper, it’s a sonic epiphany, with or without psychoactive substances.
