Portland, Oregon-based death metal collective ASCENDED DEAD presents their savage second album, Evenfall Of The Apocalypse, now streaming in its entirety ahead of its release through 20 Buck Spin this Friday.
Uniting guitarist/vocalist Jon Reider, guitarist Ian Lawrence, bassist Kevin Schreutelkamp, and drummer Charlie Koryn, ASCENDED DEAD plays death metal the ancient way with an intrinsically malign pedigree and methodical cruelty scarcely heard nowadays. Flesh-peeling intensity at warp-speed, technically frenzied leads that cut straight through bone and a relentless annihilating force that rarely ceases long enough to take a breath. Yet amidst this fiery conflagration a wholly deliberate and fanatical attention to detail and craft remain undeniable, allowing the pandemonium a distinct structure and memorability.
ASCENDED DEAD returns like abyss winds surging skyward from the ninth circle of Hell. Their first new album since 2017, Evenfall Of The Apocalypse, heralds the dawn of the final march to extermination via barely controlled death metal chaos and form-destroying necromancy. While the band has more than enough skill and ability to perform a darkly acoustic piece like “Passage To Eternity,” a rare moment of respite, repeated spins through Evenfall Of The Apocalypse only serve to perpetuate ASCENDED DEAD’s inexorable place at the vanguard of violent real death metal, carrying the banner into the future. Detrimental listening for fans of Possessed, Sadistic Intent, Necrovore, Force Of Darkness, Black Curse, Morbid Angel, Immolation, Angelcorpse, Sarcofago, Triumvir Foul, Concrete Winds, Ruin Lust, and Degial.
The instruments on Evenfall Of The Apocalypse were recorded by Charlie Koryn at Toadhouse Studios, the vocals tracked by Jason Gluck at Halsey Studios, with additional noise by Brian Rush, Charlie Koryn, and Jon Reider. The album was mixed and mastered by Stephen DeAcutis (Worm, Evoken) and completed with artwork by Kyle Bowen, photography by Aaron Pepelis and Scott Kinkade, and layout by Dan Fried.

“This coiled fluidity makes for the backbone of Evenfall: Even when passages repeat, they never quite follow a predictable pattern. Some element in the music is always modified–be it an impromptu barrage across the seemingly bottomless toms of the percussion department or the significantly upgraded lead guitar chops flying off the rails with reckless abandon. The music feels conjured more than written–fluid, alive, and unrestrained–an instinctual energy from those well-versed in the grimoires of Morbid Angel and Gorguts.” – Last Rites
“Cracked from the gorm-skulled assault of bestial death yet crafted with a superior sense of traditional rhythm and flow, Evenfall Of The Apocalypse is both a delivery upon the expected savagery per the band’s past and a freshly destructive path for the crew who’d iterate and expand upon their best traits on this long-awaited album number two.” – Grizzly Butts
“ASCENDED DEAD put every ounce of evil and unforgiving intent into these eleven tracks, creating death metal that acts as much as a harbinger of doom as a piece of relentless art. This is music for worldwide devastation, a soundtrack to watch the world burn as it, justifiably, consumes every one of us.” – Meat Mead Metal
“Their first album in six years, Evenfall Of The Apocalypse is a triumphant, annihilating opus whose searing songwriting will see people welcomed and returned in droves through its blazing onslaught. I’ve got no hesitation in naming it as an Album Of The Year contender; it’s one grievous punishment after another that only becomes cemented with each passing track. Utterly incredible.” – The Razor’s Edge
“An album that every Death Metal lover should listen to because I think it’s going to be the best of the year. 9.8/10 [translated]” – Metallerium
