James Hetfield, Metallica’s master of metal, takes ink to the next level by revealing a new tattoo. He has immortalized Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead’s ashes by adding them into his new tattoo.

Metallica had such a huge Motörhead influence on Kill ’Em All. The affection that James Hetfield feels for Motörhead’s late frontman, Lemmy Kilmister, is well documented: Metallica have covered “Overkill” dozens of times, the whole band once performed as “The Lemmys” at Kilmister’s 50th birthday bash.

As reported in Kerrange. He said he had viewed Kilmister “as a statue of a man that was immortal” and after he died “it scared me… like ‘Where’s our captain now?’”

At 60, Hetfield flaunted his latest ink masterpiece—a tribute to Lemmy—with “Ace of Spades” etched proudly on his middle finger accompanying his already-prominent finger tattoos which read, fittingly, “RIFF LIFE”. Talk about giving life the finger, quite literally! Using “black ink mixed with a pinch of his cremation ashes that were so graciously given to me,” Hetfield immortalized Lemmy’s rebellious spirit. Now, every time he throws up the iconic gesture, it’s Lemmy flipping the bird at the world through him. Rock on, legends!

Rock ‘n’ roll or rock ‘n’ urn, you decide!
